FRIDAY, August 5, 2011 (Health.com) — Viagra gets the job done, but it’s a quick fix. For many men, weaning themselves off the little blue pill and finding a longer-lasting solution to their sexual dysfunction may require hitting the gym and putting down the doughnuts.

A new Australian study, published today in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, found that losing just 5% to 10% of body weight over a two-month period improved the erectile function—and revved up the sex drives—of obese men with diabetes. Read More

MONDAY, Aug. 1 (HealthDay News) — A new nationwide look at data on masturbation among U.S. adolescents finds that boys do it much more often than girls, and they also tend to start earlier.

In addition, masturbation in adolescence appears to be tied to other types of behavior, including both a greater likelihood of engaging in sexual relations with a partner and increased condom use.

By Steven Reinberg

MONDAY, July 18 (HealthDay News) — Researchers on Monday released yet more evidence that early treatment of HIV in an infected heterosexual can protect his or her partner from becoming infected.

The study, conducted among 1,763 couples in Africa, Asia, South America and the United States, found that HIV-infected people in stable sexual relationships cut their odds of transmitting the virus to their partner by 96 percent if they got antiretroviral medications soon after diagnosis.

Older Women at Greater Risk for Common STD, Study Suggests

July 12, 2011

TUESDAY, July 12 (HealthDay News) — The sexually transmitted disease trichomoniasis may be much more common among older women than those in their 20s, and researchers are recommending routine screening for sexually active women aged 40 and older.

“We usually think of STDs as more prevalent in young people, but our study results clearly show that with [trichomoniasis], while too many young people have it, even more, older women are infected,” said the study’s senior study investigator, Charlotte Gaydos, professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, in a university news release.

July 7, 2011

By Steven Reinberg
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, July 6 (HealthDay News) — A new government report on the health and well-being of America’s children brings forth some good news: Fewer teens are having babies or engaging in binge drinking, preterm birth rates are dropping and deaths from injury are declining.

But, the same report also points to several negative trends. More eighth-graders are using drugs, more children are living in poverty and many kids are in homes where a parent hasn’t worked full time in a year.

Teens Look to Parents as Guide to Healthy Sexual Behaviors

June 23, 2011

THURSDAY, June 23 (HealthDay News) — Who do teens look to as role models for healthy sexual behavior? According to a new Canadian study, they look first to the example set by their parents, not to friends or the media.

In their survey of more than 1,100 mothers of teenagers and almost 1,200 teens between the ages of 14 and 17, researchers found that when it comes to sexuality, 45 percent of the teens considered their parents to be their role model, compared to just 32 percent who looked to their friends.

Age Alone May Not Cause Testosterone to Fall

June 7, 2011

By Maureen Salamon
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, June 7 (HealthDay News) — Testosterone levels don’t necessarily drop with age, but it’s more likely among older men with declining general health, a new study suggests.

Bucking prior research indicating age-related testosterone deficiency contributes to deteriorating health, fatigue and libido loss, Australian researchers found that blood testosterone amounts didn’t fall in older men with optimal health.

Teen Abstinence May Not Stop Later Risky Sex

May 20, 2011

FRIDAY, May 20 (HealthDay News) — Teens who choose to practice abstinence or delay having sex may still engage in sexual risk-taking as adults, according to a new study.

The researchers found that a combination of other factors, including genetics and environment, are stronger contributing factors than being sexually promiscuous in young adulthood — which they described as associated with but not causing later sexual risk-taking.
