The amount of monocolin k (lovastatin) contained in different brands of RYR varies immensely. Some products contain far too much which would yield side effects. Others contain almost none at all, which will not be effective at lowering cholesterol. The FDA recommends no more than 2.4 milligrams of lovastatin per 600 mg capsule. Real Natural Remedies Red Yeast Rice has been tested to contain 2.4 milligrams per 600mg capsule. This is an effective amount to lower cholesterol and avoid the side effects like myalgia and myopathy. You can view a diagram that outlines the difference between brands by visiting http://www.realnaturalremedies.com/BioCor_Prod.html

So have we reached a conclusion why the vast majority of physicians are so quick to recommend RX in lieu of red yeast rice?

Perhaps cynical... but does it have to do w/ profits, drug companies and

I visited a nutritionist who told me that all Red Yeast Rice brands sold in the US are stripped of the natural statin (moncolin K) that makes it so sought after from those who trying to lower their bad cholesterol. I was pretty blown away. The reason is that the FDA will not allow them to sell RYR with the statins (probably because big Pharma pays them to do so). Does any know if this is the case or if there are ANY brands they know which contain the natural statin, moncolin K?

I do not like to take statin, so I saw Nutrim Oat Bran on the internet and been ordering from them since because my cholesterol level dropped 76 points. Go to oathealth.com. Because this is a little expensive, I stopped taking it and during my last cholesterol test, it went up again. I am now ordered by my doctor to take statin. I still am so afraid to take statin bec. of so many negative comments about this med so I went back to taking Nutrim Oat Bran which gave good results. I also bought this RED RICE GRAIN that I steamed and eat like the same as brown or white rice in my every meals. I am also taking CholestOff 900 mgs Plant sterols/stanols. I do not eat meat anymore (2 times fish like salmon, perch or sardines, just veggies, fruits (bananas), whole grain bread, benacol and promise margarine, tofu and I lose 15 lbs.

I work out some 2 1/2 hours a day and have a very high HDL of typically 100 to 125 depending on intensity/duration of workouts. Overall cholesterol is typically 260-270 but peaked at over 300 some months ago. Upon suggestion of my M.D. I have been taking red yeast rice for nearly 2 months w/ the result that overall cholesterol dropped to 249. Triglycerides stayed the same essentially (77 to 78), HDL dropped from 110 to 97 (perhaps due to less intense workouts) and LDL went from 183 to136! Surprisingly ratio (Chol/HDL) dropped from 2.8 to 2.6.
I will be curious to see if continued usage results in a further drop in LDL.
Parenthetically, I have been taking fish oil for years plus glucosamine sulfate.
Anecdotal, of course, but it appears to have worked for this geezer jock aged 66. Certainly beats taking drugs w/ all the side effects.

What about taking red yeast rice along with a lower dose of Zocor? I have inherited high cholesterol and started with 10 mg of Zocor 18 years ago. Later my dr increased it to 20, then to 40. When he suggested increasing to 80 about 6 years ago, I started taking fish oil and garlic and have avoided increasing the zocor. Now I'm wondering if I can cut the zocor back to 20 and take red yeast rice. My dr. says he doesn't know, but, as usual, doesn't react with horror at what I want to try. Anyone tried this combination? I am a 68 yr old female, 5'7, 170 lbs. Kim

I started taking red rice yeast to lower my cholesterol about 4 weeks ago. My cousin gave it to me and swore by it. My total cholesterol was 211, but after just 4 weeks of taking red rice yeast (and not every day because I would forget), my total cholesterol tested at 192 (which will make my Doc really happy). I was going to change how I ate, but haven’t gotten to that step yet. And the only mood change I could see was that I was happier. For me the stuff really worked. I took the recommended dose on the label and just bought it off the shelf at my local “Mart” or pharmacy store in the natural herb section. I think I got 2 bottles (60 day supply) for about $10.90 (buy one get one free).

I consider (based on my own observations as well as professional research I've read) that "safe" cholesterol levels are most probably around 230 & NOT below 200....always allowing for variations in each individuals different body systems. Bearing in mind that most heart attck deaths show LOW cholesterol(below 200) at time of death, this is a personal observation, I am not a doctor or connected to medical activities.

I've been using Red Yeast Rice for over 7 years.
The different doctors I've had (I've moved many times) are always very frustrated with me as I continuously show that I keep so called safe levels of cholesterol/triglycerides without using prescription drugs, this is after lab. test results about every 3-4 months AND occasionally NOT taking anything (allowing the cholestrol levels to rise) so that the Red Yeast "proves" itself ! I've done this many times to convince myself(& doctors) of the effectiveness of Red Yeast Rice !!
