What a terrible article! This can’t even be called a scientific study. I am certain that if we looked to the person or group who funded this study, we would find some bias. They have provided no conclusive evidence that pot smoking + cigarette smoking is in any way different from just cigarette smoking or pot smoking individually. What kind of scientific study is this? The author even notes that the researcher mentioned this discrepancy could be caused by the amount of inhalation of each smoker. Not to mention I bet they didn’t ask how pot smokers were smoking their pot (vaporizer, pipe, joint?), how much pot they smoked at a sitting, or if they mixed tobacco with pot, which is very common for those who smoke both. I am outraged and must call these fools out as poor scientists and journalists!! Don’t believe everything you read! Definitely check it out yourself!!

the way i see it, from these stat’s one could argue that smoking pot decreases your chances of getting COPD for those that also smoke tobacco. if you are only a smoke of tobacoo, then you may have QUITE A BIT MORE then a 2.5 times chance of getting COPD. smoke marijuana alone and you won’t get COPD.

What made me give up?
One day while I was talking to a client I coughed a smokers cough and as I covered my mouth a green ball of phlemgy snotty mucus about an inch in diameter that looked like a diseased brain flew out of my throat and landed in the palm of my hand.
Fortunately my client had a box of tissues on her desk. So I quit, but it still took 3 goes to succeed.

This is a non-story and thanks to all those who’ve already pointed out that vaporizers eradicate risks of cannabis smoke. I’d further point out that the only reason more people don’t know about this and therefore use vaporizers is because of the War on (Some People who Use Some) Drugs. Currently the units are very expensive which price would obviously come down after the end of prohibition.

Thought I should qualify what I wrote as it seems people are taking sides on this subject. I do not smoke anything in any form, but I have asthma since birth which led to COPD. I blame my worsening condition at least in part to doctors and steroidal, and cortisone medications. These medications led to suppression of my immune system and then I caught a rare fungal infection. I most likely have little time left to live, you see the only medication left that is safe for me to take is Primatene Mist, and that is going to be removed from the market by the end of the year. So next spring will kill me from high pollen counts, I’ve almost died the last few springs, have almost drowned from lungs filling with fluids. When I cough I sound much like the average cigarette smoker, phlem gurgling and hacking cough that just won’t quit, so I am “sick” of hearing the government going on & on about smoking when there are much bigger causes of lung disease that are swept under the carpet.

Not too sure about this research , but will give it the benefit of the doubt for now. I do know that when cigarette taxes are raised many quit smoking. If they have lung conditions already, then quitting smoking will prolong the length of the disease, and so also increase health care costs for the entire country.
Sadly they do not compare these effects against the general public exposing what fuel exhaust and organic pollution are doing to the lungs. Organic pollution is caused by a large group of living organisms. Most organisms that cause lung disease must be declared by home sellers or rental units in lease agreements. These include such things as mold , fungus , and various other plants that give out large amounts of destructive pollen. Some such as Mulberry trees’ pollen have been proven to actually cause asthma and COPD to young children when they live in an area of high concentrations of these Mulberry trees, (Trees came from China). Other trees also cause issues such as olive trees. The point being that these trees are causing a much higher degree of lifelong disease than smoking of all kinds. And in many states and cities these trees were required to be planted for aesthetic reasons. Tremendous numbers of deaths are being related to organic pollutants and yet health scientists still pursue the smokers despite all the prior money spent which has shown smoking to be dangerous, this money should be spent on more dangerous pollutants research, after all a ten year old doesn’t even smoke but may still end up with lifelong lung disease because researchers want a sure thing. Well we know about smoking, and plenty of non smokers are buried every day from lung disease, priorities need review.

I’m 53 YO male. Smoked cigarettes 30 of those years. Grew up in KY. We started early and that was OK. Smoked marijuana for 23 yrs.
Grandfather died of Emphesema
Father died of Idiopathic Pulmonary Disease at 66. THey both were Cig smokers.
I just had 10% of my lung removed. It was MAJOR surgery. THey thought it was cancer. It was not. It is Idiopathic Pulmonary Disease!
So add up my smoking, the family history, then review prognosis and you will see I generally have 3-5 maybe 7 years. I’m recovered from the surgery mostly, and feeling good, though get out of breath quicker than others. Not likely to make it to 60 though if I listen to the prognosis. Stopped smoking weed 18 years ago and cigs 2 years ago.
So there you have it. Cig and smoker…Just stating the facts and sharing this one story of a happy guy who loved to smoked. “Live fast, die young?” I still kinda like that mode…

The article notes that “smoking pot alone doesn’t seem to increase the risk of the deadly lung condition.” It goes on to say toward the end, “those who smoke both pot and tobacco inhale each more deeply than those who smoke only tobacco.”

So it seems to me the only problem here is that pot smokers might be used to inhaling more deeply, which is not a good thing when they are smoking tobacco. Those who only smoke tobacco and not pot apparently don’t develop the habit of inhaling so deeply, so they don’t experience as severe consequences as those who smoke both, leading to the conclusion that it’s the technique, not pot, that is the problem for cigarette smokers.

Breathing only air makes sense, but pot is probably better than drinking alcohol. However, they only give the illusion of some benefit. But many think somehow addiction makes one better. That’s why there are so many comments here made by people that believe being addicted is good. Cigarette smokers are the worst at this. But I have known many including myself who quit and later when their minds had cleared said they were happy they kicked their habit. But an addict doesn’t have much choice. That’s why it is called an addiction! The first person they lie to is their selves. There have been many studies and some are better and others less so, but addicts will bad mouth all of them! Just read all the comments and it will give you cross section of what my comments are about. there’s no need to dislike addicts as we all are addicted to something. Criticizing others IMHO is worse than being an addict of anything.

I think it’s fairly obvious that the study says cigarette smoking by itself increases the chance of getting COPD, while marijuana smoking by itself does not. However, smoking pot AND cigarettes increases the chances of getting COPD greater than just cigarettes by themselves.

This addiction would cause withdrawals. Withdrawals from a true addiction are life-threatening. The only withdrawal one might experience from stopping marijuana use is being real bummed out you’re out of smoke/your new job means you have to quit. Otherwise why would you stop? lol. I like pot. I know about the studies demonstrating a lower incidence of both lung and breast cancer in pot smoker; about the studies showing it reduces neurotoxic effects of stroke and head injury; about how it promotes cell growth in the hippocampus (whereas other drugs like coke, alcohol, opiates) slow such growth.

But to be fair, other studes DO reveal some issues, such as an increased rate of bronchitis, for example. In other studies, it has been demonstrated that smoking pot in your teens can increase your chance of developing schizophrenia later in life – even if you quit!

There are studies that show teen smokers slow the development of the arcuate fasiculus region of the brain. Other studies contradict the one that reports growth of cells in the hippocampus, and find the exact opposite. Still others show permanent alterations in how certain brain regions behave, but the implications are as yet unknown.

Also, regular pot smokers increase their incidence of insomnia, and pregnant mothers who smoke are also increasing their baby’s risk of insomnia.

So just take this article with a grain of salt no matter which side of the issue you stand on. There’s no such thing as a medicine with zero chance of negative effects… you get nothing in life for free, as it were. There ARE risks, some of which are still poorly understood.

For now, the most sage advice seems to be, don’t smoke if your brain is still developing (which happens until your early twenties), and don’t smoke on a regular basis. Be smart about it. Don’t just puff away with abandon. Life never rewards that kind of thoughtless excess, in any pursuit.

well, except that marijuana users *rarely* inhale the amount of smoke cigarette users do, generally don’t do it on a consistant basis,..and some of that smoke is cooled by water pipes, or ingested through cooking. Wonder if they compared non smokers to say, bus riders inhaling it’s carbon monoxide fumes… This appears to simply be another case of Govt sponsored studies designated and *required* to find something, ANYTHING.. with which the govt can demonize marijuana..AGAIN, and justify the existence of the DEA. Next up in paid Govt studies, marijuana inhibits the sex drive, is responsible for the price of gas, high taxes, and is the main cause of global warming.

I have watched my wife suffer from meniers disease for 5 years now, spent tens of thousands on meds for her and the only thing that helps with the severe nausea is pot.I don’t smoke myself and she doesn’t keep it in the house so not to get busted by a SWAT team at3 am,so I agree that decriminalizing it is the answer.I’m dying of congestive heart failure,crushed vocal cords and a permanent tracheostomy so I will never even talk again,I wish I could vaporize it to ease my pain,it would be a lot cheaper than all the fricking meds I’m on

From what I read cannibinoids are naturally produced in are bodies. Doctors believe the cannibinoids are actually protecting the brain from overload. Imagine memorizing a hundred people by name, in a minute. Without cannibinoids in our bodies, the brain would probably be overworked and more susceptible to meltdown.

As a doctor, I can take one look at these comments and see how naive and ignorant most people are. Research has proven that marijuana contains hundreds, if not thousands of carcinogens. COPD is not cancer, so please, no one try telling me the article just proved otherwise. The real problem with marijuana is the effect on the brain. Most cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in the hippocampus, the area concerned with memory and goal settings. Ever see how pot heads are all lazy and failures, but tell themselves they are okay? This subcortical effect (out of our conscious control), is effecting us, but you just won’t realize it until you’re either extremely psychologically dependent on it, or suffering from psychosis.

A recent US Govt study was uncovered and found that a man who was autopsied after his death of natural causes, showed that he had no lung damage at all, or any other respiratory damage/issues after 50 years of continuous pot smoking.

It has long been know to many pot smokers that everything related to brain damage, respiratory damage, or other health issues caused by pot smoking are a myth.

That’s why I hate reading science in media. For example, all they say here is:
“The researchers found that smokers who use both marijuana and tobacco are 2.5 times more likely than nonsmokers to have respiratory disease and almost three times likelier to have COPD.”

Odds are, it probably something tiny like 2.5/1000 vs 1/1000. However, the media doesn’t say that, they just say 2.5 times!!!! Or for example some rare cancer that they link it to something and say 40% higher chance. Again, odds are something would be 1.4/1000 vs 1/1000 in the normal population.

By the way, look up any website that’s anti-smoking. They will probably be vague and say something like:
“Much higher risk of lung cancer in smokers”
OR, the slightly less bad version would be:
“Smokers have 8 times higher chance of developing lung cancer”

In reality, it’s 8% vs 1%. However, they intentionally leave that part out because it would contradict their notion that smokers are almost 100% doomed…

2.5 times more likely than NON-SMOKERS…. not “more than those who only smoke ciggarets” or “more than those who only smoke marijuana”, so why is marijuana even in this sentence? the rest of the statement deos not involve marijuana at all, therefore the entire statement is information regarding cigarrette smoke. the word marijuana is just arbitrarily added to the sentence. Why don’t any of thiese guys complain about how they cant get the DEA to OK reasearch on marijuana, so they stop MAKING THINGS UP! A lot of people don’t seem to understand what the article is saying. They aren’t saying that pot alone is bad. They specifically state that *isn’t* the case.
What they’ve found is that pot use can make tobacco use worse than it would be for a non-pot smoker.
It’s the interaction of the 2 that’s bad.

Bleach smells bad but at low levels of exposure, isn’t going to cause any major damage. Ammonia smells worse but again, at low levels of exposure, won’t hurt you much. But mix the two, take a sniff and you can die. They’re saying the same thing here. Pot isn’t too bad. Tobacco is worse. But mixing the two is terrible.

Buzzy I guarantee you coughing up black phlegm and stuff and your x-ray is because you smoke it out of blunts, which surprise dude, is made from tobacco….. So regardless you’re still smoking tobacco, papers are made from tobacco as well. I also tend to believe you are not in good shape and that further impairs your lungs. I was in great shape back about 6-7 years ago and smoked daily then. 6’2″ 210 lbs and I was cut, and smoking daily, so take your speech elsewhere and don’t blame the cannabis for something you did to yourself.

Sorry to ruin the party, folks, but I’ve been a daily MJ smoker for over 20 years and I wheeze and cough up brown (and sometimes black) phlegm in the shower every morning. I do not some tobacco. I know other heavy smokers with the same problem, they don’t smoke cigs either….I had a pre-op chest X-ray years ago and was told I had the lungs of a two pack a day smoker, again no cigs. I must admit, though, this is NOT the norm in “casual smokers”, and if I smoked cigs it would be ten times worse. The best thing is to keep all smoke out of your lungs, none of it is healthy. NORML, High Times experts, etc. are full of &$it.

Some important metrics are missing here. For example, what are odds that a smoker (of cigarettes OR pot) will develop fatal COPD in the first place? If someone is ten-times more likely, does that move the likelihood from .001% to .01%? From 1% to 10%?

As I understand it, the typical cigarette smoker is still far more likely to die of the same causes that non-smokers die from — trips and falls, automobile accidents, etc. I wish there were some “context” here.

FWIW, I smoke neither. My thing is heroin.

Ok, I really do not know where to begin. First off, I was a heavy user of tobacco for 59 years and DO have a problem with my COPD. I also have smoked Pot for over 50 years and attribute the pot for keeping my lungs cancer free to this day.

I have not smoked any tobacco product for 2 years now, and am finding that my lung capacity and breathing have improved. You may not believe in Cannabis as a medicine, but I sure do. I have seen what it can do and what it has done and if there is anything that should be given to the people it is the Cannabis plant. Europe and the middle east are seeing the benefits of growing hemp of all varieties. Oh well, when you get tired of being the laughing stock of the industrialized world. You might just build a good educational system (again), then try to do some catching up.

I don’t understand the point of this article, since they didn’t reveal what the COPD rates were for cigarette smokers only. That would seem critical to any conclusions being drawn- how much higher is the risk with the combination, than just smoking cigarettes alone? They cite non-smokers, but not smokers? The fact that marijuana actually open the lungs to absorbing oxygen as well as any other substance. Is not refutable it is the carcinogens in tobacco that causes the C.O.P.D.
Many patients in V.A./ hospitals after resorting to marijuana have had Drs. marvel at the recuperative as long as their lungs weren’t destroyed prior to using the marijuana.

It has positive immune components and has positive results in cancer and pain treatments.
It doesn’t even have to be smoke for the benefit it can be vaporised or eaten.

Isn’t the answer obvious. Cigarette smoke irritates and inflames the lungs…the body’s natural response and protection. Marijuana is an ANTI-INFLAMMATORY, stopping the body’s natural defenses and allowing further penetration of cigarette chemicals into the lung lining/tissue and inhibiting the body’s defenses. What a riduculous story. Why did they even include pot in this report? They could have also said that cigarettes and oranges make you sick, but if you only eat oranges, you’re fine! What are you people talking about? Smoke is bad, not matter what KIND of smoke it is! You can get sick from sitting to close to a wood fire for too long. Thus, you can get just as sick from smoking pot for too long. If you smoked pot as much as cigarettes, you have the same potential to get COPD. What gets you is the amount of time spent smoking. Exposure to smoke increases your chances of developing COPD. Pot smokers, ingest your pot instead and dont worry yourself about future lung illnesses.

It’s certainly no surprise that both cigarettes and pot together should cause an increased risk of COPD. What is actually the increased risk for just cigarette smoke though? Its apparent to everyone with an open mind that cigarette smoke causes many ills but pot smoking does not. That’s right pot does not! why is that? Simply put pot does not have all of the chemical additives that go into today’s cigarettes. If tobacco was sold in it untainted natural state there would be no harmful effects to it as well. Instead of giving a headline that tries to scare people about pot smoking you should be completely factual in both the headline and the article. Smoking is bad because of the chemical additives, pure and simple.

What I read, is that smoking both Pot and Cigarettes will lead to COPD. We ALL know that cigarettes alone cause COPD. I certainly don’t know of a Pot smoker that DOESN’T smoke cigs too.(I know they’re out there) I also agree with one comment about pot smokers don’t smoke as much as cig smokers. Myth: Marijuana is More Damaging to the Lungs Than Tobacco. Marijuana smokers are at a high risk of developing lung cancer, bronchitis, and emphysema.

Fact: Moderate smoking of marijuana appears to pose minimal danger to the lungs. Like tobacco smoke, marijuana smoke contains a number of irritants and carcinogens. But marijuana users typically smoke much less often than tobacco smokers, and over time, inhale much less smoke. As a result, the risk of serious lung damage should be lower in marijuana smokers. There have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana, and in a large study presented to the American Thoracic Society in 2006, even heavy users of smoked marijuana were found not to have any increased risk of lung cancer. It’s not that marijuana is correlating strongly with the occurrence of COPD, because as the article says, “smoking pot alone doesn’t seem to increase the risk of the deadly lung condition”. Therefore, smoking cigarettes does correlate strongly, and we simply need to understand the way in which inhaling marijuana smoke may perhaps exacerbate the health problems invigorated by cigarette smoke.

WoW…this article didn’t bring out the Pot heads it brought out complete morons…. l am one of those people who smoke pot and cigarettes. I was also just diagnosed with COPD. First off Im not real sure most of you pot smokers out there really read the article… The article never stated anything about adverse affects from pot so your arguements are pointless as most of them dont even relate to the article. I would like to point out again that the lungs weren’t designed to inhale ANY kind of smoke. In addition to what I posted…I’d like to propose the idea of growing HEMP. That’s right..HEMP. YOU CANNOT GET HIGH FROM HEMP…BUT it can be made into many consumer goods for us to use, rather than cutting down our forests… ie: paper, clothing, rope, hemp bails (used for insulation/building of homes) and many many other things. Well, no one smokes a pack of pot a day. So that reduces the exposure of lung tissue to smoke. Those that smoke pot and cigarettes probably really are more likely to smoke a pack a day (of cigarettes) than those that smoke cigarettes only. Was that measured in the study??

Pot alone doesn’t cause the problem, but pot in addition to tobacco is worse than tobacco alone, so researchers concluded that pot “may act as a “primer,” or sensitizer, in the airways to amplify the adverse effects of tobacco smoke….”

It makes more sense to me that tobacco kills the cilia which clear the lungs but pot doesn’t. Smoking pot with cilia which are already dead from smoking tobacco simply adds to the pollution which collects in the lungs of tobacco smokers. Smoking anything else would exacerbate the problem. Smoking pot alone does not cause the problem because the cilia remain alive and do their job of clearing the lungs.
