People smoke for many of the same reasons they overeat. Habbit, anxiety, satiation, an addictive personality… Correlation does not equal causation. Sometimes it points to a common denominator.

Not chemistry based, habit based.

When you stop smoking you put on weight because:
you get bored and instead of taking 10 for a cigarette you are eating.

After smoking when young, you put on weight when you are older because:
you never developed exercise habits when you were young. and, more importantly, smoking has decreased athletic stamina.
