I agree with your savings tips especially when it comes to water. Not only is it wasteful for individual buying bottled water, empty bottles are environmental hazards that we will all pay for, now and into the future. Hopefully economic conditions like this can wake us up and/or teach us how to save, our pocket, and the planet.

Another way of reducing your food budget is by creating a weekly family meal menu.

One night a week (I use Sunday night, it's quiet time for me) I prepare my menu for the week - Breakfast, Lunch and Supper x 7 days = 21 meals.

Snacks tend to be repeated week after week. I like seed & nuts for my snacks, you might prefer fresh fruit or baked nacho chips.

You will notice that certain meals tend to be repeated more often than others. If that is the case, you can even save on prep time by preparing enough for two meals at one time and freezing the second meal portion to be re-heated.

The reason that preparing a weekly meal menu will save you money is that it reduces the amount of wasted food.

How many times have you picked up something at the grocery store, only to find it later, in the back of the fridge turning all green and fuzzy.

Yeah, me too.

This is also a great tip for those of us trying to drop a few pounds. Plan your meals, try to prep as much in advance (Sunday evenings for me again) and you will always have meals at the ready and have just lost the "there's nothing in the fridge" excuse for making poor food choices.
